Mozilla Thunderbird
An open source email client. Coupled with Lightning, a calender add-on, an outstanding replacement for Microsoft's Outlook. By using the add-on Provider for Google Calendar, Lightning will sync with your Google calendar. Another great add-on is Sync Kolab, which allows you to sync your Thunderbird addressbooks using IMAP mail.

OpenOffice
An great set of free office productivity tools. Word processing, spreadsheet, database, and Powerpoint-like tools. All are compatible with MS Office document formats.

Google Chrome
A fast and secure alternative to Internet Explorer. Some neat features include the ability to create a desktop "application shortcut" for your most-used web sites. A must-have for your Gmail account, it also supports extensions. A great one is Webmail Ad Blocker which strips Google ads from your Gmail windows.
